Who needs sleep?

Any Barenaked Ladies fans out there (the musical kind not the inappropriate kind)? They have a song about insomnia entitled "Who Needs Sleep?" It's playing in my head as I type this ... not that I have insomnia, but I certainly am having trouble sleeping. Maybe because of the pregnancy, the sore throat, the half-a-dozen trips to the bathroom nightly ... I don't know, but I've been up since 3:30 and figured after laying there for an hour I might as well be productive with my time. SO, are you ready for a crazy long post?

Where to start ... the beach. I LOVE the beach (though I must say I would prefer a pool). I try to take Addi to the beach everyday, weather permitting. And it's always the same beach, and the same spot on that same beach, being Temple Beach and the spot of the fallen tree. (For those of you who know it, you know where I mean.) This past week it has been crazy low tide in the mornings - and Tuesday was the most exquisite beach day ever. Melissa and I were both in beach moods, the water was gorgeous, there was a slight breeze, minimal cloud cover, and the babies were in it for the long haul. It was seriously the BEST beach day ever - we were there almost 4 hours and didn't even realize it. Addi fell asleep before we even got to Tamura's (a grocery store/landmark between Temple Beach in Laie and our home in Hau'ula). Addi loves the beach, too. She runs up to the water and does a little dance, then runs away when a wave comes (love that latter part - makes parenting easier). Her favorite thing is to fill her buckets up with water, carry them up to where we're playing in the sand, then dump them. Correction: she doesn't know how to fill her own bucket, I or Melissa have to fill it for her. So this gets tiring pretty fast. I'm working on getting her to fill her own ... that might be a while.

Next, trips to Town. Before Addi was born Casey and I would go to town (Honolulu, Mililani, etc) literally every week. It was like our little adventure for the week to get out of Laie and go somewhere where there were stoplights and WalMarts. Now we do good to go every 6 wks. (of course Case goes everyday for work, but I mean for leisure/grocery shopping type things). We prefer to just stay on North Shore and go beaching, snorkeling, meandering around obscure towns, looking at little homes for sale (as if we could ever buy out here, ha ha ha). So this past Thursday Melissa and I decided to go to Town and get the errands done - always great to leave the weekend open for fun and exciting adventures (like going to Temple Beach at the fallen-tree spot). We went to Ross' first (Side Note: should that be Rosses or Ross'? Either way, you know what store I mean ...) Our little women were crazy personified! Addi fussed like it was the end of the world in a shopping cart, Kaiya wanted to be held but also wanted to wander, whic are both mutually exclusive desires, and by the time we checked out, which mind you wasn't really that long after we got in, they were ... well, toddlers in Rosses/Ross'. Next stop, Sam's Club. We zipped through grabbing diapers, frozen fruit, chicken, paper towels, and of course samples ... really who goes to a wholesale distributor and doesn't eat the samples? And let me tell you, it was a pretty good sample day. They even had mocha latte samples ... ha ha, gotcha - no coffee for us. Anyways, after Sam's, Miss ran to WalMart as I loaded up Addi, then we had one last stop for gas before jumping back on H1. So now to the point of the whole story ... before we even left the gas station, the little women were asleep AKA Heaven!! We had a peaceful drive all the way to Kaneohe, which is when Addi woke up and decided it was her job to wake up Kaiya, much to ours and Kaiya's dismay.

I told you this would be a long post ... you had fair warning. What else am I going to do this time of the morning?

Third, taking care of the sick and afflicted whilst being sick and afflicted. A few weeks ago I mentioned my run in with the mystery bug which has been going around town disguised as the flu mixed with every infection you can think of above the neck (minus those that aren't ear, throat, and sinus related - lest you think it includes conjunctivitis or something). I got it first, then Addi, then Case - or more correctly, Addi and Case are both currently on antibiotics for said sickness (though we're not really so sure with Addi - all we really know is she has an ear infection). You see, my throat never stopped hurting. I have thus far just tossed this aside as dry throat or whatever, but that is largely why I am currently awake. My throat was just driving me crazy (or at least keeping me awake). Case has been home from work since Tuesday (meaning he took Wed-Fri off) and I've been trying to take care of him and Add - which consists of keeping Addi occupied and quiet so Case can sleep. Yesterday we finally decided Case should go to the Doc. Now for those of you who don't know, I am a neat-freak. Ok, so that's putting it lightly ... I'm a little OCD when it comes to cleanliness. So about 1/2 hr. before time to leave for the Doc I started picking up the house, which had turned into quite the ... hmmm, "where's the floor" type of mess should I say. And my two buddies (that's Case and Add) were SO cute! Casey took Addi out to do the laundry, then they put away the soy milk and diapers from Thursday's Town trip, then they vacuumed, all the while throwing away debris that was found amongst the wreckage (i.e. diaper boxes, soy milk boxes, full trash cans, the toilet paper roll Addi decided was a toy Saturday morning, etc.) I thought it was SO cute. I ended up just following them around and taking pictures of how cute they were. (Mind you, I did the dishes and other misc. chores as well in between stalking them.)

Lastly, parties, horses, and pianos, OH MY! March seems to be the month to birth a baby, seeing as we've had tons of recent celebratory events commemorating the birth of friends and comrades. The latest edition was the Surprise Party of Taylor out at Gunstock Ranch and Seth turning 3. At Gunstock, Addi had her first encounter with a horse (and I must admit that when I looked into the horse's eye - cause you can't really look at both at the same time - all I could think of was "The Ring"). I think she liked it ... she kept saying, "Doggy". We also watched some rodeo folk roping calves while we awaited the arrival of the guest of honor - this was the sickest and perhaps one of the top 10 most disturbing things I've ever witnessed. It gives me the willies just to remember the fearful calls of the calf. I am officially anti-rodeo, even if Garth Brooks can sing a decent song about it. Seth's party was horse and calf-roping free, but plenty of chalk, cupcakes, and sippy cups. You know you might be a bit of a clean-freak when you got to a party and instead of mingling with the other kids, your 19-month-old child walks around gathering all of the chalk pieces in a bucket. That's what Addi did for a full hour. She picked up all of the chalk, even if it meant taking it from someone to pick it up ... every single piece. Once it was all picked up, then she ate a couple grapes, but mostly she just gloated over her chalk-free success. I wonder how much my little idiosyncrasies influence my progeny. Is she really going to be a neat-freak because I am? I should learn how to "make a mess and not stress" (boy, that sounded like a cheesy bumper sticker or the title of a self-help convention). On the good side, perhaps she'll want to play the piano, which I would say is a defining characteristic of my personal identity. I LOVE the piano - there's so much to say with those little black and whites. I love it when Add sits down with me and plays a little ditty (I'm sure the neighbors love it too ...) Maybe one day we'll write and sing together - that would pretty much be one of the most fulfilling moments ever. (sigh)

And now, adieu. Boy, did you really make it to the end of this post? Congrats to you; you should reward yourself ... Haagen Daaz quarts are free with your Maikai points next month (for those of you who live in Hawaii). You should treat yourself thusly. And wish me luck that I'll get back to sleep before Addi wakes up.

I must say I only skimmed your post this time. Teaching kindergarten has destroyed my attention span. But I just wanted to say, I am so jealous of the beach. I'm going to have to pya $100 for a sandbox and who knows how much for the sand, and it will barely have room for 2 kids to play. Enjoy your free sandbox!

I enjoyed this post. Addi is such a cute little girl. I love her nudie picture at the beach. I'm kinda sad that Paige doesn't get to experience the beach, ocean, sand... etc. :( We'll have to come visit sometime soon.
