heard of square foot gardening? i'm sure you have, but if not, just click on the link. we've been talking about one for a while now, and decided to just do it.
returning, our box garden is 4 ft. x 6 ft. which means we have 24 squares in which to plant. whoa! so we're doing potatoes, carrots, onions, garlic, watermelon, strawberries, tomatoes, bell peppers, corn, peas, banana peppers, spinach, lettuce, and some decorative flowers, of course.
we had intended for it to go along the north side of the front of the house, but as it so happens, that little space never gets direct sunlight. so we're putting it on casters and keeping it on the south side of the front of the house (the left side if you're looking at our front door) and we'll wheel it out to the driveway for laundry time (because it completely blocks the way between our front door and the washer/dryer, which, like all washer/dryers in hawaii, is outside), extra sunshine, etc. we also built it up off the ground, for multiple purposes: can store watering cans, extra soil, fertilizer, insecticide, etc. etc. etc. underneath; keeps the kiddos out of the dirt/young budding crops; and less bending for my compressed-disk back.
we're pretty much excited. and the best part is if our garden doesn't grow like we're hoping, we can always cover it with a piece of plywood and have a makeshift ping pong table.

lovely, lovely. i started my own container gardening on my lanai. working out great. i started some lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, and zuchinni from seed and it's great! i discovered that you shouldn't leave the seedlings in direct sunlight, it is too strong and they can wither away. so keep them away from wind and too much sun til they get bigger. fyi.
That's so fun! I'm so jealous we can't have one year round. I love that you guys painted it too!
good luck! my garden is turning out pretty good and i am excited. so now i am excited for you too.

That looks great! Way to go guys! I would so love to grow a garden. It's not going to happen in our little place though... Question.... did you get my e-mail? I had an e-mail address for you but I'm not sure it was the right one. Let me know.
way to go, that is going to be so cool when it all gets going! someday....
I love looking at your pictures. You do such a good job.. I love the differnt angles you take. What a great place to live. I love Hawaii.
wow. you guys are good! we did Square Foot Gardening when we were younger.. it was so fun! and, that whole "water" threw me off. i can't imagine anyone eating twisty cheetos outside and playing in the water right now where i live! awesome job, you guys rock!
The picture of the frame standing up reminded me of a Word Girl episode I saw recently where Word Girl's friend thought she had super powers and named herself "The Framer". She had a picture frame and would close her eyes and hold it up and supposedly she would defeat the bad guy that way. Just thought you might be interested. Yes, I'm a mom.
I can't wait to see how your garden turns out. It it works well we may try the square foot gardening method next summer. I can't believe you people in Hawaii get to grow things all year round. It's just not fair. :-)
there's nothing better than fresh tomatoes!!!! :>)
