kona low

kona is a polynesian term for 'leeward' (the side which the wind blows towards AKA west-southwest side). a 'kona low' is a deep cyclone that can form during the cool season of the central-pacific ocean, AKA hawaii territory. normally the tradewinds travel from the east, the windward side. when a kona low cyclone occurs, tradewinds give way to kona winds. in other words, the wind switches directions.

kona lows are known to cause heavy rain and wind, flash floods which often result in landslides, large surf and swells, and just all around severe weather. in hawaii, weather isn't the topic of conversation all too often. but today, a kona low hit oahu.

the view from the front door. note the river to the left ... not usually there.
unfortunately this is the left side of our house going to our back neighbor's house. yes, waterfalls. little, mini waterfalls cascading into their yard and under their house, mopping their lanai for them.
their yard.water football at byuh.shaking it all off.

laie. our neighbor community.two people we like.low-fat chocolate milk everywhere.

and the day before we went to the beach.
crazy.

Yikes is right! I hope it doesn't take long before the water finds a better place to be than your backyards and porches :)

it does get dry once the rain stops, huh? my little river is a trickle in comparison with yours, or your neighbors' and the waterfalls! this weather is what signifies winter for me.

Awesome pics, I think I might swipe a few for my blog. We really didn't get anything aside from the river in front of our house. CRAZY!!
But we are o.k., thanks for asking. I will let you know if we need anything and/or give a call when I get my head on straight today.
