remembering

i've always loved the sound of fall. it's crisper. cleaner.

and this fall was no different.

i was half-asleep on the couch in the living room as the morning light fell on me from the window above. i could smell the turkey farms that surrounded Ephraim. the sound of truck tires on pavement meant it was almost time to wake up for class, but my alarm was silent, so i continued to walk through incoherent thoughts and memories that danced across the blank slate of my mind.

the shrill digital tone of my cell phone pierced the silence and i fumbled into consciousness. it wasn't even 8, or barely past 8. where are my glasses? who would call... mom? what?

"hello?"

"we've been attacked."

i sat up. what, a robbery? the Church? who was attacking whom?

"mom? sorry, i was asleep. are you ok?"

"the twin towers in new york... it was terrorists... we've been attacked."

and so changed america's history.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

it was only 8 years ago...

"And in that day shall be heard of wars and rumors of wars, and the whole earth shall be in commotion, and men’s hearts shall fail them, and they shall say that Christ delayeth his coming until the end of the earth. And the love of men shall wax cold, and iniquity shall abound. (doctrine and covenants 45:26-27)"

where some may see the wrath of God, i see the kindness of God in fulfilling His words that signs will precede the coming of Jesus Christ, and that these signs will not only prepare us for His Glory, but also warn us of terrible and difficult events. if we watch, listen, and remember, He is being quite merciful. He has given us chance after chance after chance, prodding after prodding, to repent. to prepare. to strengthen ourselves through Him that our hearts will not fail us. that our faith will not fail us. that our love will not fail us.

"And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall. (helaman 5:12)"

I was on my mission when all this happened, one week away from coming home. The Texas A&M campus was quiet and all our appointments that day wanted to talk about why God would let this happen. Our answer, "Be still, and know that I am God."
